The
Frankston
Symphony
Orchestra
The Frankston Symphony Orchestra is the Peninsula’s longest-standing and most vibrant orchestra. Founded in 1967 by the world-renowned Australian concert pianist Vera Bradford, the orchestra was born from her vision to unite local musicians and residents in a shared celebration of music, a spirit that continues to inspire us today.
Over the decades, we’ve had the privilege of performing with an extraordinary array of artists and guests, including Geoffrey Tozer, Ronald Farren-Price, Siobhan Stagg, George Logie-Smith, Eric Austin Phillips, Max Riebl, and The Scared Wierd Little Guys, not to mention Vera Bradford herself as soloist.
Our members are a passionate community of musicians who volunteer their time, talent, and enthusiasm to bring orchestral music to life on the Mornington Peninsula. Among us are professional music teachers, doctors, engineers, scientists, accountants, and musicians from the Armed Services bands, the Australian Youth Orchestra, and even some of Australia’s major orchestras - all united by a love of music and the joy of sharing it with our community.
Each year, our concert season is a rich tapestry of sound: from movie and popular music concerts to full symphonic masterpieces, children’s concerts, youth concerto competitions, and side-by-side performances with the Peninsula Youth Orchestra. We also frequently collaborate with choruses of the Peninsula to present spectacular choral–orchestral works. With such variety, there’s always something to delight, inspire, and surprise, and we can’t wait to share it with you!
Thaddeus Huang
Artistic Director
Celebrating his 10th year with the Frankston Symphony Orchestra, Thaddeus is one of Australia’s foremost young conductors. In the 2020–2021 seasons he served as Assistant Conductor-in-Residence with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, where he conducted mainstage, young person’s, pops, and side-by-side concerts, and mentored eight talented West Australian conductors, several of whom have since achieved significant success. He has also worked with the Adelaide, Melbourne, and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras, and the Australian National Academy of Music.
Internationally, he has served as guest assistant at the Hallé, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Shanghai Opera, and Harbin Symphony Orchestra, and has conducted such ensembles as the Orchestra Filarmonica Italiana, Hungarian National Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre Symphonique de Québec, Orchestre Métropolitain, and musicians of the Orchestre de Paris and the Royal Academy of Music in London. He has also appeared at major international festivals including the Perth Festival, Adelaide Festival, Festival de Domaine Forget in Québec, and the Music in the Summer Air Festival in Shanghai.
Over his career, he has had the extraordinary privilege of working with many leading conductors of today, including Sir Mark Elder, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Mark Wigglesworth, Asher Fisch, Nicholas Carter, Oleg Caetani, Jorma Panula, Daniel Harding, Daniele Gatti, Nicholas Braithwaite, Luke Dollman, Benjamin Zander, John Hopkins, and many others. He pays forward the musical generosity he has received as a keen supporter of young musicians through his work with the Australian Youth Orchestra, West Australian Youth Orchestra, Peninsula Youth Orchestra, and Australian New Goldberg Orchestra.
As a composition undergraduate, he studied with Brenton Broadstock, Stuart Greenbaum, and Barry Conyngham at the University of Melbourne; his popular work for French horn was premiered and recorded in 2008 by Lin Jiang, the Melbourne Symphony, and the ABC.
